Always Changing: How a Robotics Veteran is Helping Shape the Future of Automation

When Graeme Paulin first encountered a robot in a UK R&D facility, he had no idea it would shape the next two decades of his career. Now, with 19 years at ABB under his belt, Graeme has joined PHS Innovate as Service Manager—bringing with him a deep well of experience in robotic support, servicing, and client engagement.

“I’m a fitter by trade,” Graeme says. “But over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how robotics has evolved—from big automotive spot welders to small, collaborative systems that even small businesses can afford and operate.”

During his time at ABB, Graeme supported hundreds of robotic systems sold throughout New Zealand. While most installations were carried out by integrators like PHS, Graeme played a key role in commissioning, troubleshooting, and helping customers get the best out of their automation investments. A standout memory includes the robot display at Auckland International Airport’s duty-free area—an installation Graeme helped manage from start to finish.

“People think robots are complicated—and they can be,” he says. “But once you understand them, they’re actually pretty straightforward. The real challenge is dealing with the kind of variability humans manage naturally.”

At PHS Innovate, Graeme is expanding the service arm of the business and mentoring the team. His goal is to make automation approachable and reliable for clients, and to support the company’s continued leadership in New Zealand’s automation landscape.

“I’m at the other end of my career,” he reflects. “It’s about sharing the lessons I’ve learned—and helping the next wave of engineers feel confident working with these systems.”

Graeme’s guiding philosophy comes from a former ABB global service manager: The answer is yes. It’s a mindset of problem-solving and innovation, no matter the challenge.

Outside of work, Graeme keeps fit with long runs—a habit dating back to his days in the Royal New Zealand Navy. If he could automate one thing? “The Auckland commute,” he says with a laugh. “No question.”

Welcome aboard, Graeme. We’re thrilled to have you on the team.
